13th Floor Elevators

Psychedelic Circus

Great American

13th Floor Elevators, Psychedelic Circus, CD
Formed in Texas in the mid-'60s, the 13th Floor Elevators started as a garage rock outfit, scoring their one and only modest national hit with You're Gonna Miss Me. While Roky Erickson's loopy persona and Tommy Hall's odd "jug" percussion were the band's most distinguishing features, several members of the group's original lineup contributed strong material to their albums. Trips to San Francisco established the group as an up-and-coming underground favorite , but Erickson’s problems with drugs and the police led to the singers commission to a state mental hospital in the laste 60’s, an ordeal from which he has never fully recovered. One of the original acid rock bands. This album features a cogent compilation of Live recordings and rare out takes. Digitally remastered with extensive liner notes.

A film about Joyside by Kevin Fritz

Wasted Orient

Plexifilm

A film about Joyside by Kevin Fritz, Wasted Orient, DVD
"Wasted Orient debunks the perception that most of the country is looking toward a hopeful and prosperous future." - The Patriot News

"A hearty, greasy helping of Chinese subculture...one that is best consumed with a few beers." - China Daily

Wasted Orient is the story of Beijing punk rock band Joyside and their first tour in a country not exactly ready for rock n' roll. Obsessed with Johnny Thunders and the philosophies of American punk, Joyside decide to spread their beer-soaked message of apathy across the countryside, filming every minute of it. The boys share their views of a bleak modern China through interviews in public toilets, countless binge drinking sessions, and in their songs ("I Don't Care About Society!" "I Wanna Piss Around You!"). Director Kevin Fritz captures an equally hilarious and uncompromising view inside a Chinese subculture through a group of silly, sloppy and hopeless punks, outsiders in their own country...

Aaron Dilloway, Bad Dreams, CD (ltd.1000)
"Dilloway's got a grave problem! Tense ghost clatter and haunted Michigan sputter collapse helplessly into fever, exhaustion, depression. This is home-taping of unconscious dread and hopeless shudder. Originally released in a small edition on his own Hanson Records, Bad Dreams return for the Wolf Eyes / ex-Violent Ramp / Galen / Couch member. When Aaron wakes up, he'll wish he were dead..." - Troniks

Abdoulaye Traore

S/T

Yaala Yaala

Abdoulaye Traore, S/T, CD
"Abdoulaye Traore of the Malian village Mountougoula recalls an early childhood of listening intently to his father’s hunter harp. Abdoulaye quickly learned to scrape the accompanying nègè, sing backing parts, and dance the blurred, rapid-fire footwork of Wasulu hunters. In 2008 he completed apprenticeship with his master, the legendary Yoro Sidibe. A young lion of this funky old-time groove, Abdoulaye aspires to become a hunters’ musician of the highest calibre - one who lives in accordance with the longstanding way of hunting, inciting hunters to provide wild game, quelling strife where it crosses his path, moralizing listeners from all walks of life, and satisfying performance goers with exceptional music and dance. This CD is a re-release of the first of his seven commercial cassettes." - Yaala Yaala

Abner Jay

Folk Song Stylist

Mississippi Records

Abner Jay, Folk Song Stylist, LP
"Long awaited follow up to the 'True Story of Abner Jay' LP. Abner Jay was a man who had a grand sweeping vision of what folk music was. In his lifetime his expression of what folk music could be encompassed some serious stylistic variations.

Sometimes he was a one-man-band travelling troubadour playing an electric banjo, harmonica and drums, who tried to hoodwink audiences into believing that he was 150 years old and the standard bearer for 'authentic Americana'. Sometimes he played in straight-up electric R&B bands such as 'Koko Joe & the Jobhunters'. Sometimes he claimed to be the 'black Bob Dylan', strumming an acoustic guitar and singing socially conscious urban folk. On this LP we find Abner in all of these modes and more (he also does a pop song about a submarine disaster, and a beautiful gospel song...)"

The True Story Of Abner Jay

Mississippi Records

Abner Jay, The True Story Of Abner Jay, LP
"Compilation culled from Abner's self released LP's and 7"s featuring 'hits' such as 'I'm So Depressed', 'Cocaine', 'Vietnam'. and 'The Reason Young People Do Drugs'.

Abner Jay was a one-man-band singer/songwriter deserving of a wider listening audience than he received in his day. This is the first vinyl release of his material since the 1970's. Great soulful folk & R&B music.

LP includes a press photo of Abner, transcriptions of his spoken word pieces, a reproduction of an informative pamphlet about Abner, and a press statement penned by Abner himself. Tip on jacket." - Mississippi Records. Recommended.

"We are very pleased to be putting out the debut release from this London experimentalist. This is two sides of creepy and complex psychedelia; an updated take on 80's DIY eclecticism, from the likes of Gareth Williams, Prominent Disturbance or L. Voag, with a hint of futuristic proggers such as Heldon. 275 pressed, comes with insert." - Savoury Days.

Actress

R.I.P

Honest Jons Records

Actress, R.I.P, 2LP
"R.I.P underlines Actress’s reputation as one of the most eloquent voices to emerge from the sub-bass nexus of London dance music. His intuitive and original grasp of beats, textures and rhythm puts him on a parallel path to dance music innovators such as Basic Channel, Burial and Aphex Twin. But the way he engages with electronic sound from first principles, realising his own self-contained sonic worlds, hints at less obvious kinships outside the dance music fraternity, with pioneers of homebrewed sound experiments such as Cabaret Voltaire, Pan Sonic and Oval. It moves the body but the sounds also tap into to something more intangible inside you; you dance, but also slip/drift into another realm, probably without even realising." - Honest Jons

Actress, Rainy Dub, 12 inch
"The implacable, alien Son Of Sleng Teng - a beast of of a tune, lumbering and snuffling, one-of-a-kind - bleeping, buzzing, knocking, dripping, reverberating... and unresolved in nine minutes... Faceless is a high-pressurized, quick-loading hyper-grub into star wars. The sleeve is de-bossed, with metallic ink; the tracks are exclusive to this single (and won't appear on Actress' new HJ album, out early Spring)." - Honest Jons

Splazsh

Honest Jons Records

Actress, Splazsh, CD
"Darren Cunningham’s eagerly-awaited new album is an adventurous, ultra-modern, thoroughly British affair, rummaging about in the inner lives of house and techno, and brilliantly elaborating the accomplishments of his debut, Hazyville. For Splazsh the fog has lifted, the sounds are less submerged than before, but still sticky and close - a signature combination of exuberance and introversion, luminescence and puzzlement. Unconstrained by the formal cliches of the dance music he loves, Actress’ melodies and arrangements are enthralled by their own genies... In love with the mysteries of groove and repetition, Splazsh is both a culmination and a new beginning for Actress, a substantial and eccentric work from a brave and coolly individual artist." - Honest Jons.

Adolf Wölfli / Baudouin de Jaer

The Heavenly Ladder

Sub Rosa

Adolf Wölfli / Baudouin de Jaer, The Heavenly Ladder, CD + hardback book
"Baudouin de Jaer had not been previously exposed to Wölfli's work. He was completely moved by the artistic and human dimensions of the mystery surrounding this gigantic and universal body of work created within the Waldau hospital in the early 20th century. He managed what none other had accomplished before: to decode Wölfli's hermetic and emblematic scores."

"Adolf Wölfli (1864 - 1930) was a Swiss artist who was one of the first artists to be associated with the Art Brut or outsider art label... Institutionalized in 1895 at Waldau psychiatric asylum near Bern (Switzerland) where he spent the rest of his adult life.

He suffered from psychosis, which led to intense hallucinations. Wölfli started drawing in 1899, but no work prior to 1904 has been preserved. In 1908, Wölfli started developing what would become a potentially endless narrative stretched across 25,000 pages interrupted only by Wölfli's death in 1930..."

Akron/Family

Akron/Family

Young God

Akron/Family, Akron/Family, CD
"Akron/Family are four extremely nice, sincere and well-mannered young men from rural America who came to NYC (in 2002) to make music, hoping to find a thread of real magic still winding through this city’s music scene. They certainly did just that, but they did it by retreating into a tiny Brooklyn apartment, where they made their own world instead, in complete and stubborn isolation. They proceeded (while simultaneously growing alarmingly long beards and developing a playful but hermetic quasi-religious/sonic worldview/creed known as “AK” or sometimes “AK-AK”) to make several albums worth of recordings on crude home equipment – the material compulsively chopped, spliced, and orchestrated into fractal jewels of song and schismatically opposed atmospheres." read more...

Alan Watts

This Is It?

Locust

Alan Watts, This Is It?, CD
A psychedelic holy grail re-issued. 'This is it!' originally cut in 1962, is regarded by many of the who’s who of psych fanatics as the first aural document of psychedelia. It is a plundering, blistering, free form freakout of totally unselfconscious group sonic exploration. What’s more: it’s a great, great album that stands the test of time. Legendary Zen guru Alan Watts led a cadre of musicians and non-musicians alike through communal chant, primitive choogle and raw American tribalism that features many of the same Bay Area Heads that appeared earlier on Locust’s Electronic Kabuki Mambo – the inimitable satirist and collage whiz Henry Jacobs, genius percussionist William Loughborough (early performer with Chet Baker/Harry Partch) among many others. if you don’t find yourself with that rare facial twitch of awe, befuddlement and unbridled glee, then surely you need your head checked.

Alan Wilkinson, John Edwards & Steve Noble

Obliquity

Bo Weavil

Alan Wilkinson, John Edwards & Steve Noble, Obliquity, CD
"Obliquity is a free jazz record, if you'll forgive the use of such a hoary, old fashioned phrase. Its scorching, heads-down momentum, rhythm and drive places it in direct line of descent from the fierce originators of the genre: Ayler, Sanders, Graves, Frank Wright. It also swings. At times it dances... Obliquity is a free jazz record through the prism of the improvisational movement in Europe, though. This is no attempt at polite revivalism or looking back/up to the 1960s. Wilkinson/Edwards/Noble are producing new, vital music of and for now. You need form to work at this level of spontaneity and certainty and any frequenter of the outer limits of the European music scene could vouch for the jazz porridge these three have put away." Highest recommendation.

Obliquity: advancing obliquely; deviating from the straight; freedom from the humdrum constraints of time and place.
