!!! / Outhud

Lab Series Vol. 2

GSL

!!! / Outhud , Lab Series Vol. 2, LP
Split EP reissue. "Originally released on vinyl only in October 1999, this now-legendary split EP was the second installment in our Lab Remix Series and a co-release with Zum. Both Outhud and !!! have since relocated from Sacramento to Brooklyn and become virtual household names in the world of indie-rock. Recent Warp Records signees !!! contribute one long and rubbery track of their over-amped funk/punk that often draws comparisons to everything from James Brown, Chic and ESG to Liquid Liquid and The Clash. Outhud, meanwhile, supply us with three alternate versions of a single classic track. Their trademark cello-heavy dub/instrumental sound is in full-effect here, given the once-over by live-sound mixer/producer Justin Vandervolgen."

(((Powerhouse Sound)))

Oslo/Chicago: Breaks

Atavistic

(((Powerhouse Sound))), Oslo/Chicago: Breaks, 2CD
(((Powerhouse Sound))) formed in the Summer of 2005, originally with Ken Vandermark on tenor sax, Ingebrigt Haker Flaten & Nate Mcbride on basses, Lasse Marhaug on electronics and on drums. Ken Vandermark composed tracks with the idea of building the music from the perspective of the bass instead of the more conventional approach of composition construction, "from the top down", as he puts it. "The three major influences I considered when putting the music together were the rhythmic ideas of James Brown, the dub ideas of Lee Perry and the collage ideas of Public Enemy." Their new Chicago-based touring line up, featuring Vandermark, Mcbride, Jeff Parker & John Herndon (Tortoise, Isotope) will continue to work from these original concepts developed at the band's inception...

1/3 Octave Band

Navigation By Light

Celebrate Psi Phenomenon

1/3 Octave Band, Navigation By Light, CDR
Another new jam from New Zealand duo of Bill Wood and Jules Desmond aka 1/3 Octave Band, courtesy of Campbell Kneale's Celebrate Psi Phenomenon label. Packaged as always in the immediately recognizable wallpaper sleeve, this is some serious soft focus, gauzy and dreamy and free floating minimal bliss for sure. Four tracks, 49 minutes, each track a lengthy drift through delicate worlds of subtle sound. "From a barely audible whir, flecked with distant high end melodies and crystalline glimmering, to creaking cavernous murmurs, to almost industrial dronescapes, to haunting cinematic soundscapes, but with all the jagged edges worn away into smooth soft shapes. This is the music of dreams. Music from another world. The sound of wandering somnambulant through some soft space, eyes closed, mind open, and drifting heavenward." Mastered by Campbell Kneale.

1/3 Octave Band, The System Likes You and Wants to be Your Friend, CDR
"At long last Pseudo Arcana gets to release an album by one of my very favourite local bands. Bill Wood and friends explore similar territory to Surface of the Earth with results that may be even more sublime. 3 epic tracks that further develop the 1/3 Octave sound." - Antony Milton, Pseudo Arcana

10ft Ganja Plant

Midnight Landing

ROIR

10ft Ganja Plant, Midnight Landing, CD
"10 Ft. Ganja Plant is (part of) John Brown’s Body & much more. John Brown’s Body is the best roots reggae group in America. Anyone who has seen them live, or owns one of their albums on Shanachie, can attest that no other band has quite captured the 70’s spirit like this crew. “Midnight Landing,” is 10 Ft. Ganja Plant’s second release on ROIR. Their first was uniformly hailed by the music press. “Midnight Landing,” at its heart, is inspired by the recording processes of the great Jamaican studio bands of the 70's (and their American counterparts, Motown and Stax) where a song was potentially written, learned, and recorded in one session, with the band playing live on one track and then being voiced on the second track, with no regrets, and no apologies. Add to this ethos, some dubwise studio mastery and experimentation (“Chanting Nyabinghi,” inspired by the African drumming style, is a creative departure and one of the best tracks they’ve ever cut) and you begin to get the picture."

16 Bitch Pile-Up

Bury Me Deep

Troniks

16 Bitch Pile-Up, Bury Me Deep, CD (ltd.1000)
"The California dreams that led to death... There's twists, bends, curves, scrapes, and bumps. The atmosphere was simply frustrating and depressing - good! The ending is a shocker of sorts, each track is an unpredictable event that makes your heart beat with more than just suspense, but pure emotion - yes, definitely emotion. I even cried. Twice.

16 Bitch Pile-Up are a fierce 3 piece squall of Heartland (now California) electronics, thick moans, and scraped effects. Having previously performed at such noteworthy festivals as All Tomorrow's Parties, No Fun and Wooden Octopus Skull, 16BPU here presents their first widely available CD. Full colour (+ naughty) fold out cover artwork in jewelcase. Limited edition of 1000 copies." - Troniks

16 Bitch Pile-Up / Mike Shiflet

Make Like A Fetus And Abort / Extract, Behold

Ecstatic Peace

16 Bitch Pile-Up / Mike Shiflet, Make Like A Fetus And Abort / Extract, Behold, LP (ltd.500)
"Ohio has been rampant on the Ecstatic Peace play lists lately with the release of a long player earlier this year by Leslie Keffer and a forthcoming split LP by Emeralds and Tusco Terror. Like Keffer, who’s moved to Nashville (to be closer to Be Your Own Pet), 16 Bitch Pile-Up and Mike Shiflet are both ex-pats of Ohio. 16 Bitch to California and Shiflet to some weird small town in Japan.

Mike Shiflet we’ve known for years as he has produced some of the more interesting tapes and whatnot of midwestern out-ness from his Gameboy label and from his legendary duo tour with Burning Star Core/ C. Spencer Yeh of a few years back. Like the amazing beard he has sported since childhood his music is a free-fall of acoustic wonder... He is also the cat responsible for turning on most of the world to the radical charms of three girls from Ohio wickedly named 16 Bitch Pile-Up..."

230 Divisadero

S/T

Locust

230 Divisadero, S/T, CD
The transcontinental duo 230 Divisadero make stately, finely crafted atmospheric songs that stand outside the bounds of contemporary musical trends. Their self released langorous drone EP has drawn comparisons to SunnO))) and Nurse With Wound. On their self titled full length debut, the duo of Britain's Matt Shaw (Tex la Homa) and Monaco's Nick Grey have honed in the wide audio brush strokes of their EP and have produced one of the finest blends of Brian Eno inspired art song we've heard in years. 230 Divisadero is simultaneously refreshing and reminiscent of classic acts like Talk Talk & New Zealand's sterling & sadly under recognized act This Kind of Punishment.

A film about Joyside by Kevin Fritz

Wasted Orient

Plexifilm

A film about Joyside by Kevin Fritz, Wasted Orient, DVD
"Wasted Orient debunks the perception that most of the country is looking toward a hopeful and prosperous future." - The Patriot News

"A hearty, greasy helping of Chinese subculture...one that is best consumed with a few beers." - China Daily

Wasted Orient is the story of Beijing punk rock band Joyside and their first tour in a country not exactly ready for rock n' roll. Obsessed with Johnny Thunders and the philosophies of American punk, Joyside decide to spread their beer-soaked message of apathy across the countryside, filming every minute of it. The boys share their views of a bleak modern China through interviews in public toilets, countless binge drinking sessions, and in their songs ("I Don't Care About Society!" "I Wanna Piss Around You!"). Director Kevin Fritz captures an equally hilarious and uncompromising view inside a Chinese subculture through a group of silly, sloppy and hopeless punks, outsiders in their own country...

A film by Ryszard Bugajski

Interrogation (Przesluchanie)

Second Run

A film by Ryszard Bugajski, Interrogation (Przesluchanie), DVD
Based on a true story reflecting the Stalinist terror of the early 1950s, Ryszard Bugajski’s harrowing film was banned under martial law in Poland and only became available on underground VHS through a copy smuggled out by the director at great risk. Tonia (Krystyna Janda), a singer in a sleazy cabaret, is imprisoned without explanation. Days become weeks become months, varied only by the persuasion, intimidation and torture of interrogation. Janda’s outstanding depiction, of a woman who becomes heroic in the face of torture and imprisonment, takes you to places few films are willing to explore.

A Silver Mt. Zion

The Pretty Little Lightning Paw

Constellation

A Silver Mt. Zion, The Pretty Little Lightning Paw, CD EP
The 'Pretty Little Lightning Paw' E.P. contains all new songs, with a total running time of just over 30 minutes. "More Action!  Less Tears!" opens the record - a noisy clarion call of chiming instrumental rock driven by a long wraparound riff & recorded live off the floor during the This is Our Punk-Rock... sessions.  This cut finds various Mt. Zion players trading/switching instruments for the rockout, with cascading tape treatments added by Efrim in the mixdown.  Three more songs follow which Efrim began recording in sporadic late-night sessions at the hotel2tango in Montreal over Summer and Fall of 2003.  All three were built up from Efrim's initial vocals and guitar, with co-founding Mt. Zion member Thierry collaborating closely on instrumental & backing vocal arrangements and Jessica working up violin and vocal parts as well.  A four-voice choir (including two members of Frankie Sparo) lends additional vocal support.

A.M. (Anthony Milton)

Orla

Ikuisuus

A.M. (Anthony Milton), Orla, CD
"One day in early 2004 I arrived home to find the biggest parcel I had ever received sitting on my doorstep, it was crudely wrapped and covered in stamps. I was amazed that anyone would POST something like this through the regular mail system.

I brought it inside and cut away the packaging. To my astonishment I found that it contained a large old 'Orla' chord organ and a letter from Marcel Bear (Empirical) saying that he had noted my recent enthusiasm for organ tones (see also With Throats As Fine As Needles and Sunken...).

He had found this one at a garage sale and thought that I might like it. My interest in organs had been at least in part inspired by my reading about Charlemagne Palestine and his concept of the "Golden Music". His idea of a stream of sound that may facilitate an ecstatic bliss of religious intensity has been hugely influential to me (in much the same way as Haino's 'sound of the universe')...

Ikuisuus

Aan, Salamaa, CDR
"Aan is a duo by Kulkija and Uton. These recordings are from their first meetings ever (at least in these psychophysical bodies) in Helsinki and Tampere, late 2004... The music is full of strange sounds and dark atmospheres, deeply in the very heart of the so-called mystical forrest folk illusion. Astral travelling, dreams from the other side... some beings in the source, dancing their song for life, death & mysteries." - Ikuisuus. 6 tracks, total 39.17 minutes.
